About Bornholmslinjen
Bornholmslinjen is the Bornholm brand of Molslinjen A/S, the Danish ferry company based at Færgevej 7A in Aarhus that has sailed the Kattegat between Jutland and Zealand since 1966. Molslinjen won the Danish state's ten-year tender for the Bornholm routes in 2016 and took over the crossings on 1 September 2018, succeeding BornholmerFærgen, the operator that had grown out of the island's own steamship company of 1866 and had been known as Bornholmstrafikken until 2010. Since then the group has added the Øresund crossing and several domestic Danish island routes under sister brands, and the customer service in Rønne answers on the same number every day from 06:30 to midnight.
The ships to Bornholm
Two kinds of ship serve the island. On Ystad - Rønne sail the fast ferries Express 1 and Express 5. Express 1 is one of the world's largest and fastest catamaran ferries: 112.6 m long and 30.5 m wide, built by Incat in Tasmania, with four MAN engines delivering 36 MW, a top speed of 40 knots and 36 knots fully loaded, a car deck the size of half a football pitch with 4.60 m headroom on the lower deck, and a lift to the passenger deck with Molly's Bistro and Barista's Coffee Shop. Køge - Rønne and Sassnitz - Rønne are sailed by the Hammershus, a combined freight and passenger ferry with cabins and the Provianten restaurant, joined on the Sassnitz route by the Povl Anker, built in 1978 at the Aalborg shipyard and strengthened for ice.
Routes on this site
Ystad - Rønne is the backbone: 80 minutes, all year, with four to five sailings a day each way on weekdays and up to eight in the June to September high season. The night ferry Køge - Rønne takes 5 hours 30 minutes, once a night in each direction, leaving shortly after midnight and arriving early in the morning. Sassnitz - Rønne is the direct link from Germany in 3 hours 20 minutes, sailed on selected days with a strong summer emphasis. All three arrive at Rønne, where cars to and from Ystad use the Sverigesvej 1 access, cars to and from Køge and Sassnitz the Tysklandsvej access and foot passengers the terminal at Dampskibskajen 5. Check-in, vehicles and pets
Check-in deadlines count from the scheduled departure and remain binding when the ferry is late: 10 minutes in Ystad, 15 in Køge and 20 in Sassnitz for cars up to 2.95 m, foot passengers and bicycles; 30 minutes at every port for vehicles above 2.95 m, lorries, trailers and coaches, vehicles for disabled passengers, passengers needing boarding assistance and electric cars with charging booked on board; 60 minutes in Køge for dangerous goods. The authorities regularly check travellers to and from Bornholm, so carry a passport or identity card. Dogs and cats travel in the marked dog areas on a lead or in a carrier, off the furniture, or stay in the car; cabins are not available to pets. Via Sweden the animal must be declared to Swedish customs, Tullverket, and the Danish food and veterinary authority lists the dog breeds that may not enter Denmark.
Tickets
Bornholmslinjen sells Standard, Flex and Lowprice tickets, with cabins, vehicles and pets added during booking and changes made online under Change ticket. Fares are dynamic, and the operator's own advice is to book early, because early bookings usually mean a lower price. Disabled passengers with a valid parking permit or companion card can buy special tickets, and berth tickets for the Køge night ferry are reserved through customer service the day before at the latest. Are pets allowed on board?+
Dogs and cats are welcome in the marked dog areas of the passenger decks, on a lead or in a carrier and not on the seats, or they can stay in your car; cabins are not available to pets. Travellers via Sweden must declare the animal to Swedish customs, and Denmark's list of banned dog breeds applies on Bornholm.
