Getting to Mukran port
The ferry leaves from the Mukran ferry port a few kilometres south of Sassnitz, not from the town harbour; the address for drivers is Im Fährhafen 20, 18546 Sassnitz. Rügen is reached from Stralsund over the Rügen bridge and the B96; Berlin and Hamburg are each about three hours away. Short- and long-term parking is available at the port, the passenger terminal is within walking distance of the car park, and a drop-off zone directly at the terminal is free for 30 minutes. Without a car, bus line 22 runs all year from the railway stations at Sassnitz, Prora and Binz to the harbour, and line 18 from Sassnitz station from May to October; get off at the Mukran Fährhafen stop, about 200 m from the Bornholmslinjen terminal. In summer and autumn the RE27 train links the port of Sassnitz with Bergen auf Rügen.
Check-in and departure
Check-in closes 20 minutes before the scheduled departure for cars up to 2.95 m in height, foot passengers and bicycles. Thirty minutes apply to vehicles above 2.95 m, lorries, trailers and coaches, to vehicles for disabled passengers and to foot passengers who need help boarding. The deadlines count from the scheduled time and remain binding when the ferry is delayed. There is no luggage service in Sassnitz or Rønne, so everyone carries their own bags on board, and the boarding assistance offered at the ticket offices in Rønne, Køge and Ystad is not available in Sassnitz. The authorities regularly check travellers to and from Bornholm, so carry a passport or identity card.
On board the Hammershus and Povl Anker
Both ships are conventional ferries with car decks and open passenger decks. On the Hammershus the Provianten restaurant and kiosk serves hot food, smørrebrød, coffee, soft ice and sweets from early morning until late, and there is a view of the Baltic for the whole crossing. Three hours and twenty minutes are long enough for a meal and short enough to do without a cabin. The Povl Anker, built in 1978 at the Aalborg shipyard and strengthened for ice, is the older of the two ships on the route.
Vehicles, bicycles and pets
Cars, motorhomes, caravans, lorries, trailers and coaches all sail, and bicycles are checked in with the 20-minute deadline. Give the correct vehicle height when you book, because anything above 2.95 m falls under the 30-minute rule, and reserve early: a seasonal route with a handful of sailings fills its vehicle deck first. Dogs and cats travel in the marked dog areas of the passenger decks, on a lead or in a suitable carrier and never on the furniture, or stay in your car for the crossing. Cabins are not available to pets. The Danish food and veterinary authority publishes the list of dog breeds that may not be brought into Denmark, including on Bornholm.
Arrival in Rønne and onward travel
The ship docks in Rønne on Bornholm's west coast, the island's main town and harbour. Cars to and from Sassnitz use the Tysklandsvej access, foot passengers the terminal at Dampskibskajen 5; for the return, follow the Tysklandsvej signs rather than those for the Ystad ferry. The old town is a few minutes' walk from the quay, and the main roads from Rønne reach every part of the island within about half an hour.
Tickets and fares
Bornholmslinjen sells Standard, Flex and Lowprice tickets, and fares rise with demand, so book as soon as the dates are fixed, especially with a vehicle in the summer holidays. Because this route sails on selected days, find the sailing first and compare the fare second. Sassnitz - Rønne
From Rügen straight across to Bornholm
Sassnitz - Rønne is the only ferry from Germany to Bornholm without a detour through a third country. Bornholmslinjen sails it from the Mukran port a few kilometres south of Sassnitz on Rügen in 3 hours 20 minutes, with the conventional ferries Hammershus and Povl Anker. Berlin and Hamburg are each about three hours' drive from the port, so approach and crossing fit into one travel day.
The price of the short road is the frequency. This is the most seasonal of the three Bornholm routes: dense in the summer half-year and around holidays, thin in the colder months, on average about three sailings a week over the year. Check the sailing days for your dates before booking accommodation; when Sassnitz does not sail, the frequent Ystad - Rønne fast ferry is the fallback.
